Join us at SIR 2019!
By Daniel Sze, MD, FSIR, SIR 2019 Chair Fall 2018
As the field of interventional radiology joins the major leagues by being granted a Primary Specialty Certificate by the American Board of Medical Specialties, our educational, institutional and cultural priorities need to evolve. As fun as it is to be at the leading edge of medicine, IR can no longer be considered a band of clever eccentrics and rebels. Fight the power? We have become the power! However, our survival in the major leagues will require escalation and intensification of strategy, invention and inclusive recruitment. You’ll find that nowhere better than at the SIR Annual Scientific Meeting, where you can find out where our field is headed—and let your voice be heard.
We are designing a schedule that will allow you to find something relevant to your practice in any session on any day of the week. Choose from plenary sessions on the hottest issues in IR, categorical courses, minisymposia, scientific presentations and posters, and revamped angio club style case-based workshops and interactive dialogue meet-the-expert sessions—plus plenty of opportunity for SAMs.
Creative, influential, formative, revitalizing, connecting, current—all those descriptors apply equally well to the SIR annual meeting and to our chosen location for SIR 2019—Austin, Texas. Austin’s semi-official slogan is “Keep Austin Weird.” The capital of Texas is a dynamic and multicultural city, with a hip and innovative profile that mirrors the groundbreaking specialty of IR and its role within medicine.
The home of SXSW (South by Southwest, the wildly popular interactive music, film, and tech conference), Austin is an entrepreneurial hub that attracts talent from all over the world and is home to some of today’s brightest minds in technology, medicine, the arts, and education.
On behalf of the SIR Annual Scientific Meeting Committee, I invite you to join your peers, associates and industry partners as we capture the spirit of Austin and shape the future of IR at SIR 2019, March 23–28. It is the only place where you’ll find such a collaborative sharing of data, experience and ideas.
In addition to being an innovation hub, Austin is also a transportation hub, with more than 70 nonstop flights daily to Austin/Bergstrom International Airport—including international flights from London, Frankfurt, Cancun, Guadalajara and Toronto. Austin has also been in the news for building new luxury and boutique hotels. Book your air travel and arrange for your international visas today.
Don’t miss the opportunity to rock IR in the Live Music Capital of the World, home of Janis Joplin, Willie Nelson, Lucinda Williams, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dixie Chicks and Fabulous Thunderbirds!
