Description:

Interventional Radiology (IR) physicians deliver clinical care and precisely targeted interventions for patients with a wide variety of issues involving renal and genitourinary (GU) health. This care includes, but is not limited to, health management, clinical consultation, diagnosis, medical imaging and interpretation, image-guided procedural interventions, and continuing care for and in collaboration with these patients.

SIR’s mission in renal and GU care is to improve the health of patients with renal and GU conditions by promoting the delivery of outstanding procedural and nonprocedural care while encouraging professional collaboration with urologists, nephrologists, endocrinologists and other physicians who care for these patients. The Renal and GU Clinical Specialty Council aims to develop strategic initiatives and programmatic guidance for the SIR membership to improve the diagnosis and clinical care of patients with renal and GU conditions.

Over the next few years, the Renal and GU CSC is focusing on the following priority areas:

  • Educating IRs on endovascular fistula creation and dialysis access creation and maintenance
  • Improving access to prostatic arterial embolization through physician education, collaboration on guidelines with the AUA, and promoting research in this area
  • Collaborating with other physician societies to improve the performance and accessibility of adrenal venous sampling
  • Developing a white paper on appropriate indications for IR and urologic approaches to upper urinary tract obstruction
  • Working with the Interventional Oncology CSC on indications and performance of percutaneous renal ablation

The Renal and GU Clinical Specialty Council is seeking at-large members. Applicants must be SIR members in good standing and should be experts in renal and genitourinary care, including dialysis access maintenance, percutaneous AV fistula creation, kidney cancer treatment, benign prostate care, GU interventions or other related areas. Applications are considered confidential. Upon the completion of the application period, current CSC leadership will recommend volunteers for appointment by the SIR Board of Directors. At-large volunteers shall serve a three-year term with the opportunity for a three-year reappointment. Terms begin and end upon the completion of the annual SIR Members’ Business Meeting.
