Description:

The recognition that a child is not just a small adult has introduced a new specialty within interventional radiology, that of Pediatric Interventional Radiology. The diseases that affect children differ substantially from those of adults. In addition, the variability of patient age, from newborn to over 19 years, patient size, blood volume, physiology, and overall life expectancy, must be considered when performing procedures, even when those procedures are similar to ones performed on adult patients. SIR recognizes that all practicing interventional radiologist may be called upon to care for a child however, they also recognize that there is a subset of IR physicians who are specifically trained to treat conditions that are unique to children. Through education, training, and development of clinical initiatives and a research agenda, the SIR Pediatric CSC will help guide the practice of pediatric IR to deliver high quality care for children.

The mission of the SIR Pediatric IR Council is to develop and support methods for training IR physicians involved in the delivery of image guided procedures in children.  We are committed to the development and delivery of safe, advanced image guided therapy throughout the broad scope of IR from interventional oncology, venous disease, gastrointestinal disease, renal and genitourinary disease, pain management, vascular disease and neurointerventional radiology.

Over the next few years, the Pediatric IR CSC is focusing on:

  • Recommendations for Pediatric IR training for IR/DR Residents
  • Pediatric specific registry database for oncology treatment for children
  • Business education for new Pediatric IR section chiefs

The Pediatric IR Clinical Specialty Council is seeking at-large members. Applicants must be SIR members in good standing and should be interested and experienced in pediatric interventional radiology. Applications are considered confidential. Upon the completion of the application period, current CSC leadership will recommend volunteers for appointment by the SIR Board of Directors. At-large volunteers shall serve a three-year term with the opportunity for a three-year reappointment. Terms begin and end upon the completion of the annual SIR Members’ Business Meeting.
