The Economics Committee is launching a new workgroup focused on alternative payment models (APMs), a crucial initiative for advancing reimbursement strategies in interventional radiology (IR). This workgroup will initially convene monthly over a six-month period to establish a comprehensive plan. Afterward, meeting frequency will adjust to bi-monthly or quarterly, depending on the progress of plan development.
This opportunity is part of the committee's broader structure, which includes three existing workgroups: Carrier Advocacy, CPT/RUC, and Coding Application and Guidance. The APM workgroup aims to implement payment approaches that incentivize high-quality, cost-efficient care across specific clinical conditions, care episodes, or populations. For IR physicians, traditional payment systems often pose barriers that limit their ability to deliver comprehensive patient care tailored to individual needs, potentially resulting in avoidable health issues and treatments.
This initiative is a key step to move IR reimbursement away from the flawed RVU model. As such, members of this committee are expected to lay the foundation of a reimbursement model (or models) that will contribute to the success of IR as an independent specialty. To ensure the success of this initiative, consistent attendance and active participation are essential requirements. Interested applicants commit to a three-year term.
